Every cat deserves a chance.

Cattrap’s mission is to humanely reduce the feral cat population on Nantucket and to help alleviate the suffering of these community cats in need. Cattrap was launched on Nantucket in 2011 by a small group of concerned animal advocates who wanted a humane no-kill program for these cats where spay/neuter and all needed care would be provided for these cats.

For the last nine years, Cattrap has been fulfilling this vision and working around the clock 365 days a year to help the community cats on Nantucket and humanely reduce the feral cat population. The organization humanely traps, neuters and returns feral cats providing food, shelter and medical care where needed. Cattrap also helps to foster and prepare for adoption those kittens and cats who are able to go into homes. This includes neonatal care for abandoned kittens, important socialization activities, and medical care including testing, vaccinations, and wound/organ/trauma management. Furthermore, Cattrap provides longer term care for cats with special needs.

In the last nine years, we have helped over 1500 kittens and cats. There has been approximately a 75% decrease in cats and kittens needing to be trapped, spayed and neutered, and placed in homes where possible. In general, the colony numbers also have decreased by about that much too. But even at these lower numbers we are still very busy keeping up with and trying to get the random cats that are sighted across the island, monitoring colonies for cats in need of spay/neuter, and caring for the cats we rescue. In addition, there are people who still don't spay and neuter their cats, then they let them out where they reproduce and reproduce and boom there is once again a growing feral cat population. So Cattrap is still working 24/7 to continue our positive trend.

Cattrap is an all-volunteer run program comprised of incredibly dedicated and hardworking people who work tirelessly to help Nantucket's Community Cats. These committed volunteers work year round to give every cat on Nantucket a chance. These volunteers never fail to step in an an as-needed and much-appreciated bases. Cattrap has no public facility and does all of its work in the field and in the homes of volunteers.

As a volunteer-run organization, Cattrap depends on donations to provide spay/neuter surgery, shelter, food, and medical care for the cats we rescue.
